lyrics

For sixth months after moving here
I spent hours every day
Picking up the pieces of another man’s life
That he left behind when he moved away

Broken bottles, busted plates,
Rusted metal on an old bed frame,
Pottery and crockery and other much the same
Abandoned in the garden - weathered by the rain.

So, in the middle of planting season,
We salt the ground with garbage for no good reason.
Come the harvest, what will I find?
A garden growing garbage to blow my mind.

Modern Nature. How does your garden grow?
Modern Nature - we will surely reap just what we sow.

For six months every single day,
Out in that garden picking glass.
Filled a bushel barrel with these vicious little shards
That seemed to grow out of the ground like grass

Every night they’d grow like weeds;
Every morning, I’d wake up and see
The sun on sharpened edges grinning brightly up at me,
Covering the flower beds - blossoms make you bleed.

The spring rolls up, and it goes on;
Pick a peck of painful slivers out of your palms…
What does it say about the modern man
That nothing natural grows here, and nothing can?

Modern Nature. How does your garden grow?
Modern Nature - we will surely reap just what we sow.

For six years I’ve been living here,
End every summer I think I’m clear -
This will be the season that I get it cleared away,
And I’ll be ready to plant next year.

But some things just don’t go as planned;
Some jobs are too big for just one man.
I look out of my window at the winter closing in,
And I know what’s waiting for me when the weather breaks again:

Deep in the frozen ground, the roots run deep.
They’ll be growing underneath the snow where no one sees.
Come the springtime, what will I find?
A garden growing garage reaching upwards towards the sky…

Modern Nature. How does your garden grow?
Modern Nature - we will surely reap just what we sow.
