about

"Say Less” is a collection of pop, rock, and folk songs that doesn’t even try to present a unified front. It’s the Spotify playlist you don’t remember making last summer. It’s a mixtape from high school that you’re embarrassed about, but secretly blast at high volume on the highway at midnight. It’s the contents of that mp3 player you found under your bed, and you thought it was dead, but it still charges, and oh my god I remember that song, play it again.

These songs were written in parking lots, recorded in bedrooms, performed in bars, forgotten, remembered, forgotten again, abandoned, rediscovered, re-recorded in a different bedroom (except for the vocals, which we did in the bathroom because it somehow sounded better), and finally painstakingly laid down one track at a time by a single person in a tiny windowless studio for your enjoyment. Everything you hear on this album is me. The instruments, the vocals, the crappy art design on the cover - it’s all me. It’s a labor of love and I hope you like it as much as my mother does.

Track Name: Ambrosia Wine
You'd be proud that through it all,
I've been careful not to call you up
In the middle of the night,
To tell you that I miss you.

And it's early to call it love,
But it's you I'm thinking of,
And so I thought you should know
How much you're on my mind.

And it's a long walk home
Through the falling leaves in late October
And you run through my veins tonight
Like sweet Ambrosia Wine

The day the summer died
I watched you come alive
The sky, on fire,
Reflected in your eyes

See the falling leaves collide
And you tell me that it's cold outside tonight
Why don't you come inside?

And it's a long walk home
Through the falling leaves in late October
And you run through my veins tonight
Like sweet Ambrosia Wine
Track Name: Let It Go
And despite the men we’ve grown into,
We were boys just yesterday.
We arose this morning robbed of youth,
Wondering how we got this way;
And the morning sunlight stings our eyes
As it burns the mist away.
Now we see each other as we are -
We’re defined by our mistakes.

Can you let it go?
Forgive me my transgressions;
Can you let ‘em go away?
Can you let it go?
Oh, don’t leave me here,
A prisoner of the things I couldn’t say.
Can you let it go?

When I look into your face, my friend,
I see anger; I see pain.
And I wish I felt that time alone
Could erase these wounds I’ve made…
Tell me, brother - could we both move on
If the blood were washed away?
Are we damned to live our lives out
Bound to a past we cannot change?

Can you let it go?
Forgive me my transgressions;
Can you let ‘em go away?
Can you let it go?
Oh, don’t leave me here,
A prisoner of the things I couldn’t say.
Can you let it go?

And after all is said and done,
I’m not the only guilty one,
And if you’re being honest, you
Will find you need forgiveness too.

Can you let it go?
Forgive me my transgressions;
Can you let ‘em go away?
Can you let it go?
Oh, don’t leave me here,
A prisoner of the things I couldn’t say.
Can you let it go?
Track Name: Engagement Song
Well, it was the deepest cold I had ever known
Riding the length of 15 all alone
And the wind was high; I could feel it in my bones
As I motored on to Mansfield

And so on I go, with the highway icing over,
And Jamie Cullum singing on the radio
"What a difference a day makes..." and well should I know
As I push my luck over deeper drifts of snow

Toward your apartment,
Which will be colder than it is outside...
You're always poor in something, and we are
Rich in other things tonight

Singing, Ooo, I love you
Let the weather do what it will do
Ooo, I love you
And nothings gonna keep me far away from you.

So, late that night, I will shake my head
'Cause you stole all the blankets and it's freezing in your bed
But baby, I don't mind, 'cause it's like I said
I want to be with you forever - a little cold won't make me forget

That's I've been waiting for you
Such a long, cold, lonely time
And I'll brave any weather
For the chance to call you mine

Singing, Ooo, I love you
Let the weather do what it will do
Ooo, I love you
And nothings gonna keep me far away from you.

Ooo, I love you
Let the weather do what it will do
Ooo, I love you
And nothings gonna keep me
Nothing's gonna keep me far away from you.
Track Name: Modern Nature
For sixth months after moving here
I spent hours every day
Picking up the pieces of another man’s life
That he left behind when he moved away

Broken bottles, busted plates,
Rusted metal on an old bed frame,
Pottery and crockery and other much the same
Abandoned in the garden - weathered by the rain.

So, in the middle of planting season,
We salt the ground with garbage for no good reason.
Come the harvest, what will I find?
A garden growing garbage to blow my mind.

Modern Nature. How does your garden grow?
Modern Nature - we will surely reap just what we sow.

For six months every single day,
Out in that garden picking glass.
Filled a bushel barrel with these vicious little shards
That seemed to grow out of the ground like grass

Every night they’d grow like weeds;
Every morning, I’d wake up and see
The sun on sharpened edges grinning brightly up at me,
Covering the flower beds - blossoms make you bleed.

The spring rolls up, and it goes on;
Pick a peck of painful slivers out of your palms…
What does it say about the modern man
That nothing natural grows here, and nothing can?

Modern Nature. How does your garden grow?
Modern Nature - we will surely reap just what we sow.

For six years I’ve been living here,
End every summer I think I’m clear -
This will be the season that I get it cleared away,
And I’ll be ready to plant next year.

But some things just don’t go as planned;
Some jobs are too big for just one man.
I look out of my window at the winter closing in,
And I know what’s waiting for me when the weather breaks again:

Deep in the frozen ground, the roots run deep.
They’ll be growing underneath the snow where no one sees.
Come the springtime, what will I find?
A garden growing garage reaching upwards towards the sky…

Modern Nature. How does your garden grow?
Modern Nature - we will surely reap just what we sow.
Track Name: Death of a Rose
His clothes were as black as the soul of December;
She asked him, half joking, “Love, why do you mourn?”
He answered, “My darling, I mourn for the roses
That die on this day in spite of their thorns,

“When they’re pulled from the bushes and packaged in plastic
To stand at the heart of some lover’s bouquet.
Shipped ‘round the world in cold February
To weaken, and wither, and die on display.”

And the roses are rootless, and too far from home.
Yeah, surrounded by strangers, they’re dying alone;
And year after year, and rose after rose,
The cycle continues, and that’s how it goes -
And all they learn about love is how quickly it goes.
Track Name: Meghan's Tune
Last night, I was feeling lost and lonely at the end of a down dark day.
Last night, I was thinking of you only, but I couldn’t find the words to say.
Then I saw you standing in the corner, and you hit me with those baby blues;
Pulled me close, and whispered, “Listen to me, honey - do you feel just like I do?”

Baby,
Put your arms around me honey, hold me tight.
Don’t you worry none, it’s gonna be all right.
Oh, baby - you know what to do.

This morning, when the sun was coming over the horizon, I was holding you tight.
This morning, when I woke up with my arms around you, baby, I was feeling all right.
Never thought I’d ever be so lucky as to hold a girl like you.
Never dreamed I’d ever find somebody who could love me like you do.

Baby,
Put your arms around me honey hold me tight.
Lay me down and just love me with all your might.
Oh, baby - you know what to do.
Track Name: Ashes, Ashes
When I met her, we were children playing Ring Around the Rose…
The brightest eyes and fairest hair had my little Josie.
And I knew I loved her even then, the sweetest girl in town -
Ashes, ashes, we all fall down.

Years later, we were sweethearts - Lord, I loved her heart and soul.
So I asked her if she’d marry me - a ring for little Josie.
When she said she loved another, in my rage I shot her down…
Ashes, ashes, we all fall down.

Now I’m waiting here in prison for the fire of the rising sun,
And I know there’s no denying this awful thing I’ve done…
And when they come to hang me, Lord, I know right where I’m bound.
Ashes, ashes, we all fall down.
Track Name: Rebound Girl
I’m offering a two week celebration
Of my romantic isolation,
Which is new and strange and cuts me like a knife.

We’re gonna keep things nice and easy.
We’re gonna date for two weeks, free and breezy,
Then pack your shit and get out of my life.
(He’s got to move on!)

Do you wanna be my rebound girl?
All is fair, my dear, in love and war.
Do you wanna be my rebound girl?
If you like, I’ll help you find the door.

There’s nothing you can say to make me turn around and stay.
You’re only temporary! Cab fare’s on the table by the bed.
There’s nothing you can do to make me fall in love with you -
The flavor of the week don’t own me - get it in your head, now baby.

Do you wanna be my rebound girl?
I’ll say it now, so you will understand.
Do you wanna be my rebound girl?
I’m only using you, I’m not your man.

And if your feelings linger on,
I’ll just refer you to this song:
You knew what this was.

Do you wanna be my rebound girl?
Baby, say anything, but don’t call it love!
Do you wanna be my rebound girl?
‘Cause it ain’t your heart I’m thinking of!
Track Name: Devil's Mocha
She read a copy of the Kama Sutra over fresh Sumatra:
Hot coffee in late July.
As the cup cooled down, the reading got hotter -
She stole a glance from the corner of her eye

At the tall iced mocha standing in the corner -
She creamed and sugared; he was hypnotized. He said,
“Let me buy you one, baby - what’s your drink?”
She looked at him and sighed…

The devil’s mocha.
Nothing else will do,
She wants the devil’s mocha.
A cup of black coffee to cure your low-down blues.

Pretty soon, they were carrying a sleep debt - no time to waste.
She was jonesing for a jolt from the temperature and taste
Of the macchiato Americano
That only he could provide.

And he was burning deep down for a caffeinated kiss
That she could only get from those cappuccino lips.
They were percolating full time:
Couldn’t pass a coffee shop without

The devil’s mocha.
Nothing else will do,
She wants the devil’s mocha.
A cup of black coffee to cure your low-down blues.

Well, I’m sure they thought that they were doing just fine -
Coffee cooking, keep the grinder going all the time.
But you know you gotta put on the brakes
When you wake up every morning with a headache and the shakes.

Coffee and love, so the story goes,
With the passage of time, they grow bitter and cold.
They say he found a new barista,
They say she switched to tea so,
I guess that is the end of the rhyme.

In a Starbucks in the Village, he is wearing a frown;
He sits alone at a table choking decaf down
And in a tearoom uptown, she learns that Earl Grey don’t drown
The dream of Kama Sutra Sumatra:

The devil’s mocha.
Decaf just won’t do,
He wants the devil’s mocha.
She needs more than simply tea for two:
She wants a double shot with cream and sugar too,
The devil’s mocha:
A cup of black coffee to cure your low-down blues.
